Explore contemporary culture through humanities and social sciences courses.

The South in Black and White is being offered in partnership with Duke University. The course explores 20th-century Southern history through live music, poetry, lectures, stories, discussions, oral histories, and dramatic performances. Instructors include Professor Tim Tyson, author of Blood Done Sign my Name (made into a feature film) and The Blood of Emmett Till, and Mary D. Williams, nationally recognized gospel singer and folklorist.

SEF-3001DN The South in Black and White

This course focuses on present-day and historical documentary traditions in American South, with an emphasis on call and response between black and white cultures, as imbedded in particular histories and cultures found in the South, and as performed in music and theater; and portrayed in documentary films, civil rights photography, Southern literature, and historical and autobiographical writing. It includes historical texts, oral histories and testimonies of living persons, along with documentary films, photographs, and writings from people in ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ and elsewhere in the region.
